Our culture seems to want us to believe that there is ONE person out there for each of us -- nowhere is this more present than in hollywood movies. What is the function of such propaganda? Is it at odds with evolutionary theories of mate selection?
Although it's bizarre, Andrew was indeed correct today. Apparently, some men have been shown to lactate small amounts under specific conditions (typically hormone therapy). So the underlying architecture is there for men.
The obstacle for men developing breasts and nursing in a significant way... is that males would need to have these hormones present during puberty. The problem is that these same "female" hormones would also jeopardize, if not prevent, these males' ability to produce testes and sperm by overriding androgen hormones.
So although men are unlikely to start nursing in the near future, they theoretically could evolve to do so. What would be the specific conditions for this behavior to occur, and what physical changes would men likely undergo?
