Latin American Weekly Report

Intelligence Research, Ltd.
Available online. (W&L subscription)
News and analysis on contemporary Latin America, published since 1967. The database, which appears to be updated on Tuesdays, is pretty simple to navigate and use. The one possible stumbling block might be the fact that our account allows only one W& user at a time to be logged in to the database -- other logins will be blocked. To avoid this becoming a problem, please remember to log out when you have finished a session.
Links will be maintained in Annie and in several places in the library Web site, such as here.

Historical Statistics of the United States

Cambridge University Press.
Available online. (W&L subscription)
Published in 2006 as a five-volume set, HSUS is a database of over 37,000 data series (statistical categories) from U.S. and Colonial history. The database also contains extensive essays on the measurements of U.S. history. Data are available as published tables, spreadsheet files (Excel), PDF documents, and custom graphs or charts. This is the first update -- and major expansion -- of a two-volume set published by the U.S. Census Bureau in 1976.
The search and display functions of this database take a while to get used to, so if you have any questions, please let me know.
Links will be maintained in several location in our Web site, including here.

Oxford English Dictionary

This is a reminder that Leyburn Library maintains a subscription to the online Oxford English Dictionary, almost certainly the most important modern English-language dictionary.

Unlike the set-in-stone printed OED, the online form is updated several times a year and Oxford University Press always releases lists of new (newly-acceptable) words and new meanings. The latest additions include, among others:
bling
Lollywood
bada-bing
drive-by
offshoring
liposculpture

If you should want to check on any of these, or other terms, here is our link to the Oxford English Dictionary.
You might notice that the opening screen includes a link to New Words.
