Time for Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences
We are embarking on our next round of weeding in the Science Library. This section of the collection is (thankfully) much smaller than the previous one. It includes books in anthropology (mainly archaeology), earth science, marine science, environmental studies, and natural resource issues. A complete list of topics is available at http://library.wlu.edu/science/earthsciweed.asp. If any of the topics listed are of interest to you, take note of the call number(s) so you can review that section. I encourage everyone to look at this list, regardless of which department you are in.
All of the books that are candidates for removal from the collection are marked with bright green paper strips, imprinted with the call number and title of the book. If there is a book that you do not want removed from the collection, simply write on the strip "Do Not Remove" or "DNR." You do not need to state a reason to keep the book, and there will be no questions asked if a book is challenged. (It is also completely anonymous.) If you want to check out a book that has a green strip, please don't let the green strip prevent you.
I want to remind everyone of the procedure for weeding. I started with a list of titles that have not been checked out in at least fifteen years. Then I took the list to the stacks, and went through each book one by one and evaluated each for relevancy, currency, and appropriateness for our curriculum. In sum, of the original list of books that had not been checked out, only half have been marked for removal.
I know some of you have not participated in this project before, so if you have any questions, please let me know. The end of the review period will be mid-summer, and I will send out plenty of reminders. Also, you can look through the rest of this blog for more background.
