Here we go...

Karin reports "The dumpster is here, the carpet on LL1 is coming up, and NO MORE PARKING behind the library. The dust wall on LL1 should go up today, too."

They're pulling the rug out from under us!

This is where our Technical Services folks (Acquisitions, Cataloging) are going on Lower Level 1.

VHS Tapes

The VHS tapes are being moved from the Circulation area down to Room 102. Elizabeth reports that there may or may not be room in 102 for all the VHS tapes. Heavily-used ones may end up shelved with the DVD's.
The VHS tapes stored in Room 102 will listed in Annie with a Status of "Storage."

Currently, you may request the VHS tapes in storage by sending an email to Access Services:
Circ_Reserve@wlu.edu

It will take up to 24 hours to receive the requested material. Patrons will be notified via email.

June 17 Update

To make way for the new home of Technical Services, the Emeritus Faculty Lounge has moved. Yesterday Leyburn was full of hammering and pounding as the walls of the old lounge came tumbling down. A precursor of things to come!

For the remainder of the summer, the left public elevator will be unavailable. The construction crew is using it to bring materials and tools up to Level 1 and to take trash out to the dumpster behind Level 4.

There is NO parking behind Leyburn for the duration of the construction project, no exceptions. Even the handicap spot is off-limits!

If there were any doubts....

As of today, June 19, the north end of Lower Level 1 is off-limits. The dust curtain is going up and NO ONE is allowed inside it without permission and a hard hat. To sooth any doubts or anxiety, here is one last look at the new Technical Services home before the push to completion later this summer. At the far end in the photo is the former Emeritus Faculty Lounge, sans walls. On the left is the dust curtain surrounding the north end of the stacks. For the moment, the copier on LL1 is still available.

And we mean OUT!

Update on VHS Tapes and change in location for Newspapers

The VHS tapes that are stored in 102 have a status of "in storage". There over 4000 of them.
We have placed 650 VHS tapes with the DVDs. These are tapes which we have determined to be high use. They have been checked-out more then 25 times in the past 3 years.

The tapes that will be placed with the DVDs now have hot pink labels on their spines that read "VHS". This is how we will (hopefully) determine what should be shelved with the DVDs and what will stay in storage.

Now that the dust curtain is up, we will move the newspapers to LL1. This will happen today. I hope to have the current periodicals moved by this time next week. I will place signage to direct our users to the new location.

Walls going up!

If you haven't peeked in the door on LL1 to the new Technical Services area, give it a try! The rooms are starting to take shape!

Current Periodicals

We are in the process of moving all of the current periodicals to lower level 1. For the duration of the renovation, they will be housed near the dust curtain (next to the newspapers and in front of the bound periodicals). We are labeling the shelves with each title's name and will be putting up signage on the end panels. I have already put signage were the periodicals used to be housed directing our users to the new location.

Requesting Videos in Storage

Now that most of Leyburn’s videotapes have been moved into temporary storage for the duration of the renovation, we have implemented a request link in Annie to make it as easy as we can to request one of the videos. Look for the link under the WebBridge button on the right side of the screen. We are using the functionality of WebBridge to send the title and call number of the video to the request form, and the patron will just need to enter their name and email address to complete the request. Videotapes should be available within 24 hours during the work week and within 72 hours on the weekend.

You can link to The Arab world [videorecording] to see how the request feature will work.

Leyburn Library staff thanks John Doyle, Associate Law Librarian, for creating this request form.

First Human Move!

Lots of boxes, files, and furniture have been moved around Leyburn in preparation for the renovation of the Main level. And now our first actual person has relocated! As of Monday, June 30, Dick Grefe, Senior Reference Librarian, will be in room 401A on Lower Level 4, just around the corner from the elevator. His phone extension will remain 8648. Now all Dick has to do is decide where to hang his movie poster collection!

Guinness World Records

As part of the renovation project, Karin has been cleaning out the library’s closets. It should come as no surprise that she has found some interesting artifacts including several hula hoops.

Access Services has been hard at work moving several of the library’s collections in preparation for the renovation. As a staff moral activity, Elizabeth decided to hold a hula hoop contest. The Access Services staff challenged several members of Information Technology Services to see who could twirl the hoop the longest. In a landslide victory, Crystal (Library staff) won! Although, we won’t find her name in the Guinness World Records book (Reference AG243 .G87 2007) she did us proud.

Microfilm machines

The two PCs that were attached to the microfilm scanning stations have been retired. The newer microfilm station has been set to be a print only station in preparation for its move to Level 1. The older microfilm station is able to be used as a reader until it gets placed into storage for the renovation. The newest microfilm scanner will be set up and hopefully fully functional within the next week. For now, we have one coin operated microfilm printer, two old card operated microfilm printers (which will be surplussed in a few weeks).
