Still More Things I Learned at the Reference Desk

Have you noticed that the two primary printing options on the "Innovation Lab" computers refer to the same physical printer? Printer M1 and printer C1 are the same printer. Wondered why?

The default, which is M1, refers a print job to mongraphic printing (black-and-white). To get the same printer to print a job -- even the same page -- in color, the user has to change the printer option to C1.

According to Judi, this was done because the Mac's are unable to figure out for themselves that a print job should be in color, while the PC's are. More or less. Thus, all Innovation Lab users now have to make a choice to print in color.

And, yes, this is kind of a step backwards. Before a change was made this summer, the PC's automatically treated color pages as color printing.

Another Lexington Population question

"The population of Lexington for 1950? I have the Rockbridge County and Buena Vista population for 1950, but Lexington was not an independent city at the time."

This is very similar to this earlier question.
But, thanks to posting that earlier q-and-a in this blog, answering this question took about 3 minutes, instead of 30 minutes.

More Things I Learned at the Reference Desk

Whilst fielding repeats of the same questions at the Reference Desk, i finally discovered The Truth about two situations:

There no longer is any admonition from ITS against campus visitors using Microsoft Word (or other Microsoft products?) at the "guest" computers. Apparently changed months ago and I have been misleading inquiring patrons for those same months.

The "L" drive continues to be unavailable (sporadically?) from Innovation Lab computers (part of the innovation, I guess). Those in need of "L" drive access can use the LL1 lab, etc. ITS has not yet identified the source of the problem.

A whine: It sure would be nice if staff who discover these little tidbits, especially the little tidbits which involve significant policy changes, would share this with the rest of us.

Temporary Accounts

This type of question has arisen from time to time. The answer to this type of question has arisen far less frequently.

A local resident who is auditing an English class at W&L wanted to know if he could have remote access to the campus network in order to make use of the online resources, including library resources, the instructor is using in the course.
Judi Owens and John White had to kick this up to Ruth Floyd, who responded.... yes, such short-term students may have temporary network accounts. All such requests have to go to Ruth.

September 7, 2009

It begins

Two issues which already have arisen at the Reference Desk:

printing from wireless: According to Ben Hartless, wireless printing is not available for students, and it may be months before it is available.

printing from "Innovation Lab" Mac's: Students still need to use the supplementary login to be able to print. And it may be months before this situation is fixed.

S&P Index Constituents

A faculty member is looking for the historical membership of the following index groups:

  • Standard and Poors 500

  • Standard and Poors Midcap 400

  • Standard and Poors Smallcap 600

He wanted membership in 2000, 2004 and 2007. This information is available in Compustat on WRDS, but it is limited to faculty and students only. Access is avaiable in the library lab and in Huntley lab.

S&P Index Constituents
This query retrieves historic constituents of the S&P main indices using the Compustat PDE monthly format. The Variable CPSPINM "S&P Primary Index Marker" will have a value of 1 when a company belongs to the S&P 500 at the end of that month; and values of 2 and 3 for members of the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600 respectively.

Asthma Research

I have been working with a couple of the Shepherd Poverty Program students who (together with Harlan Beckley) are collecting information on socioeconomic aspects of asthma and related conditions among children, both in the U.S. and internationally.
To make sure we do not lose the data sources we identify, I have been building this research guide.

These research guides are already accessible via keyword through our site search engine, but I may want to make some of them more "obvious," listing them in appropriate places within the Web site. Still mulling that...

Books in Spring Term

I had a coversation with a student who needs books on Russia's petroleum industry (Gazprom, etc.) for a 20-page paper in Politics 295E, a task complicated by these facts: we do not have many books on this topic; all of what we have is checked out; and this is the fifth week of Spring Term (no ILL).

Possible solutions include the obvious -- request recalls of the books and check VMI's library (which, as it turns out, has almost nothing).

But the best solution seems to be using online databases to retrieve the contents of books; Praeger Security International does this very well, although there also are other possibilities.
Just something to keep in mind.

Interdepartmental 201 practice quiz

I've had a few students who are having problems doing an online test or quiz for Interdepartmental 201. This quiz is NOT in blackboard or sakai-it's on some commercial site. The course is some kind of info-literacy course for business students.

Special software is needed to run this quiz. It's supposedly installed in the 101 lab here, and in the lab in Huntleigh Hall. I've had reports of the quiz not working in 101, so if a student is having trouble, direct them to Huntleigh.

Oil as Political Power

I met with a student in Professor Kiracofe's Politics 105 course (Global Politics) about his research on natural resources, particularly oil, as a source of political power. This actually is fairly difficult to research as a general or theoretical topic, but, fortunately, the student decided to focus on a couple case studies (Russia-Ukraine, etc.).

Middle School Sexuality

I am working with a student in David Novack's Sociology 280 class on her research for a paper on sexuality/sexual behavior among middle school students.

"Office Ladies"

I met with a student who is trying to write two papers for two courses in the same subject area. The specific topic is Japanese "office ladies" (the female equivalent of "salarymen") and, more broadly, the involvement of Japanese women in grassroots political and social activity.
For Sascha Goluboff's Feminist Anthropology course, the emphasis is on the anthropological literature, while the literature of political science and other social sciences is appropriate for Robin Le Blanc's Japanese Political System class.
I am still working on a research guide.

Moroccan-based Al Qaeda-inspired terror networks

I met with a student who already has worked for 1 1/2 years on this honors thesis in Politics (including a Washington think-tank internship). To give an idea of his seriousness -- one of his "advisors" is John Esposito, the editor of Oxford Islamic Studies Online.
The topic is more far-ranging than the title might indicate and the available research material is voluminous. Here is the research guide we discussed.

January 15, 2009

Media Coverage of the Chesapeake Bay

A student starting her capstone project for Environmental Studies is researching press coverage of the Chesapeake Bay's environmental issues over the years.
She wants to focus on selected interrnational (Economist), national (Time, New York Times), local (Annapolis Capital), and scientific publications (Science, Nature), particularly very recent years.

Believe it or not, there is very little analysis of this particular issue, so most of the relevant (?) sources concern media coverage of environmental issues in general.
The research guide we assembled is a starting point, but there is much more to do.

Pedagogy of Oppression

A student in Sascha Goluboff's Anthropology 288 (Childhood) course needed help with this topic:

"My thesis: In this paper, I will discuss how styles of teaching emphasizing obedience, curriculum which privileges the dominant in society, funding methods that reproduce inequality, and unacknowledged family differences reinforces the socioeconomic hierarchy.

For my introduction, I need more general theory on tactics used to perpetuate of power and oppression. Something like oppressors try to control the way the oppressed think, destroy all information about the oppressed, place blame on oppressed and make them feel inferior, etc.

Then I have a style of teaching, curriculum, funding, and family differences section, which I would like to be able to find more specific information on."

Space Race and International Relations

A student in POL 105 writies: "We've been studying the theory of realism, which argues that states' actions are a result of them seeking to maximize their own self-interest or power, as opposed to liberalism, which argues that they act to expand democratic values. Its an extension of the theory that individuals always based on what's best for them. I want to say that America developed its space program because it wanted to defend itself from Russia and build international power. I pretty much have the info I need for why this is realist from class readings, but I need background info on the development of the space program and race to space. "

Obesity and fast food study

Question: I am researching the relationship between fast food restaurant and obesity (both per capita in large US cities). So far, we have difficulty in finding information for specific cities. I was wondering if you had any suggestions of where we could look.

Answer:
If there is some flexibility on the locations and time periods, there are several sources to use. Here are two options that seem like they would work well for the current need.

For obesity statistics, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Local Health Risk Prevalence Data - City and County Data is a possible source

For the number of fast food restaurants, the economic census is the most authoritative source:
2002 Economic Census: Geographic Area Series (Metro areas, counties and places)
use "Limited-Service Restaurants" or NAICS 722211 in the "Accommodation and Food Services" sector.

An e-mail from a member of the History Department:
I've agreed to write a book chapter of 8-10,000 words entitled, "Propaganda and Public Opinion in the Soviet Union During the Second World War" and am seeking assistance in compiling a bibliography of English-language publications that bear on this topic. I know research in this area rather well as I have published several works on the Leningrad during World War II; however, I would appreciate your help to make sure that I don't overlook something important. I would be glad to meet with either of you to discuss the matter further. If the library's renovations hinder fulfilling this request, please let me know.

R.E. Lee student in Poverty Studies:

I'm supposed to be comparing the educational achievement gap among the top and bottom quintiles in the US with the achievement gap among the top and bottom quintiles in various European countries. I have been able to find some limited information on the median incomes relating to educational attainment, but Prof. Beckley would like me to take it a step farther and look at comparing test scores, graduation rates, college completion levels, etc. I've been looking at information from the OECD, the Census Bureau, and the NCES mostly, but I was wondering if you knew of any other good sites especially for comparative data."

Today's question involves finding numbers on Jewish intermarriage -- by sect/observance level (reform, conservative, etc.) It's this latter qualification that is causing problems.

A student in the Poverty Studies capstone course is working with Harlan Beckley to evaluate coverage of poverty-related issues in three U.S. newspapers -- the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, the Courier-Journal in Louisville, and the Pioneer Press in St. Paul.

A year ago, I would have recommended LexisNexis Academic for this work -- before LexisNexis' re-organized and "improved" their search interface. But now the "upstart" Newsbank Access World News is much easier to use for searching most individual U.S. newspapers.

Need a list of companies and dates of their IPOs

A student wants a list of companies that had their initial public offering (IPO) within a set range of years. This can be tricky because a companies IPO date is not included in many sources. Hoovers.com provides a good IPO section, and it can be used to find recent IPOs. To go back in time, the COMPUSTAT database is a good source. We have access for W&L students and faculty through WRDS. http://library.wlu.edu/details.php?resID=1225

It must be used on a computer that is located in either Leyburn or Huntley Hall, and the user must be logged into the campus network. (Unaffiliated users may not have access to WRDS.) Some knowledge of how to extract company data is required so inexperienced users should be referred to John T. for help.

A student asked about interpreting job offers from companies in different locations. Since one offer was much lower than expected, she wanted to know how to respond to the differences in offers. While there are many ways to approach this sort of question, this is what I normally recommend.

The cost of living will have an effect on salaries paid at different locations. (There are also many other factors that will influence salaries, but the other factors are more difficult to estimate.)

While there are difference sources that could be used to determine the cost of living, I like the ACCRA Cost of Living Index (REF HB235 U6 C58). The organization is by state, but Washington, D.C. is listed as one metro area under D.C. but including NoVA.

Use the composite index to gage the differences in buying power between different locations.

For example, if the salary was $30,000, the buying power of that $30,000 in Arlington is different from the same salary in Lexington.

If the DC metro area has a composite index of 137.0, this means that it is 37% more expensive than the average of all participating areas.

If you divide the $30000 by the index value, you will get the "average" equivalent purchasing power. So, 30000/1.37 = 21897.81

To compare this salary with one with equivalent purchasing power in Lexington (with a composite index of 99.3) multiply the average figure by the index value - 21897.81*.993=21411.53.

So, an offer of $25,000 in Lexington is better than $30,000 in Arlington (all other factors being equivalent).

Please note that the differences in taxes between two locations will also have an effect on the net salary that is not accounted for in the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.

Again, these are rough measures that allow a quick comparison between locations.

Transport in Ukraine

W&L student:
I have a research question having to do with finding transportation industry information for Ukraine. The only source I have found so far that has yielded anything is Europa World Plus. I have tried the CIA world fact book, LexisNexis country profiles, and the UNCDB, and have not gotten much out of them. Specifically what I am looking for is the following:

What kind of transportation exists today in Ukraine, do they manufacture vehicles in country, if not, where do they get them from. Also, if you can find their equivalent to the Department of Transportation and get statistics on ownership of vehicles and number of licensed drivers. Do you need a motorcycle license or just a driver's license for two wheeled products. Are two wheeled products popular and where are they coming from.

Speaker-Phones for Conference Calls

A member of the Politics Department faculty asked me about the availability of speaker-phones on campus for conference-calls in classroom situations. He recently had a favorable experience using one in class.
After consulting with John White, Flash Floyd, and Dana Camper, this may be a more-or-less adequate response:

Some rooms are already set up with speaker phones for conferences calls, including the Chavis Board Room (Commons), Tucker 112, and the Dean's conference room in Huntley Hall.

Dana Camper also has a portable speaker-phone that can be reserved, but it can only be used in a room equipped with an analog phone-line. Off the top of her head, Dana came up with this list of such rooms, in addition to ones listed above: Northen Auditorium, Commons room #345, Stackhouse Theater in the Commons, room #221 in Huntley Hall. There may be others.

Note: The above refers only to classroom capabilities and the undergrad side of campus.

Government on Genocide

A new faculty member (Politics) wants to identify U.S. Government materials on genocide and issues of remembrance/forgetting.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
Includes Executive Branch and Congressional materials.

LexisNexis Congressional
Includes only Congressional publications -- hearings, reports, etc.
(coverage extends backs to the 1970's and the publisher is working "backwards" to include the 19th century)

This database is the "official " U.S. Government search engine, covering only U.S. government (Federal and state) Web pages.
Anything posted on any one of these public sites since the mid-1990's could show up.

AMICI CURIAE briefs for the VMI Supreme Court Case regarding the admission of women

A patron is looking for access to the AMICI CURIAE briefs presented in the VMI Supreme Court Case regarding the admission of women: Docket no. 94-1941, 518 U.S. 515; 116 S. Ct. 2264.

These are available in LexisNexis Academic. In the Legal Research section, select "Federal Case Law" and do a search in "supreme court briefs." Change the date to e.g. 1993 through 1996 and search for 94-1941 (which is the docket number).

The Law Library has a copy of the briefs in a single bound volume. Volume 250 of "Landmark Briefs and Arguments of the Supreme Court..." (call number KF4550.A1 .L3 in the Law Faculty Library).

Gender Equity Bibliography

I was "asked" (hah!) by the Committee on Women and Washington and Lee to put together a bibliography of reading on issues relating to gender equity among faculty and staff at W&L.
Some of the possible topics include childcare, salary and benefits, maternity/paternity leave, recruitment and retention, discriminatory actions, collegiality, communication, general climate and environment. And, of course, there are more -- lots more....

The members of the Committee are expected to work on reading this stuff during the summer and a law school student is charged with actually gathering the material.

Number of terrorist incidents worldwide by country

Student is looking for the number terrorist incidents by country in 2003 or 2004.

This is challenging and I could not locate a summary by country, but chronologies are available. The State Department offers Patterns of Global Terrorism 2003.
this has a chronology of incidents in appendix A. This publication changes its name in 2004 to Country Reports on Terrorism, but it seems to drop the chronology.

A better source for this information is Worldwide Incidents Tracking System which will allow you to search for incidents by several factors including date ranges beginning with 2004. The results open in a table, which can be saved and with a lot of cleanup, eventually turned into a spread sheet to run a cross tab by country or imported into Access to run a summary query by country.

Value of Afterschool Programs

A student is researching the economics or cost-vs.-benefits relationship of afterschool programs.
EconLit was surprisingly ineffective -- almost nothing.
The fact that the NBER's collection of papers on the economics of education included only one item on after-school programs tends to reinforce the impression that there is not much economics-focused research on this topic.
ERIC was much more helpful. What was strange about this search, however, was that the Ebsco version of ERIC was very difficult to work with, almost as if the search interface had gone nutty. The free (U.S. Department of Education) version of ERIC was much easier to work with and more productive.
Two other productive resources -- the NCES and U.S. DOE sites.

Finally, an ongoing difficulty in conducting this research is the fact that there are at least three viable ways to spell the subject -- afterschool, after-school, or "after school."

Average size of houses in US

Student wants to know the average size of houses in the US. This seemingly simple question gets a little complicated. First, house size can be measured in several ways, most commonly by the number of rooms and in square feet. It may also be better to look at house in a certain classification rather than in total - such as all urban or suburban houses. Also, the mathematical average is not generally used for data like this because it is too easily affected by extremes. The median is more commonly used.
A good source for this data on housing can be found in the American Housing Survey (AHS).

RefWorks question

I've just started using RefWorks and like it, but....
GeoRef (FirstSearch) works great, but I'd love to be able to export to RefWorks from web of science. But that doesn't seem to work?
Suggestions?

Answer:
It isn't difficult to get citations out of Web of Science (WoS) and into RefWorks, but it is a few more steps than the direct export from GeoRef or Scopus. I will attempt to explain here, but it might be easier to show you sometime.

1. In WoS mark the references that you want to export
2. when ready to export, select "Marked List" or "View Marked List" (if it takes you to a summary page, click on "View Marked Records")
3. Under "Step 1," select the fields that you want to export (and I suggest including the ISSN if you want to be able to connect to ILL or the full text from RefWorks).
4. Under "Step 2," select "Export to Reference Software"
5. the file should start saving automatically, if not, click on the "Export" button.
6. log into RefWorks
7. Under the "References" menu, select "Import"
8. In the Import form, Set "Import Filter/Data Source" to "ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)"
9. Set Database to "Web of Science" and select a folder if desired
10. click on the "Browse" button under "Import Data from the following Text file" and navigate to the WoS file of exported records (this was called "uml_view.cgi" when I did this)
11. Click on the "Import" button at the bottom of the form.

Your citations should now be in the "Last Imported Folder"
