Books in Spring Term

I had a coversation with a student who needs books on Russia's petroleum industry (Gazprom, etc.) for a 20-page paper in Politics 295E, a task complicated by these facts: we do not have many books on this topic; all of what we have is checked out; and this is the fifth week of Spring Term (no ILL).

Possible solutions include the obvious -- request recalls of the books and check VMI's library (which, as it turns out, has almost nothing).

But the best solution seems to be using online databases to retrieve the contents of books; Praeger Security International does this very well, although there also are other possibilities.
Just something to keep in mind.

I had an appointment with a student in Leslie Cintron's Sociology 264 (Work and Family) course, starting on research for a paper on "families on welfare/in poverty and how they handle childcare during the summer when there isn't any school to help cover the hours they have no parents around."
Here is the research guide.

The students are doing research on a variety of topics touching on the figure of Carmen: literature, film, art, history, music, etc. Their final project is to put a collaborative website together about their research findings. John Blackburn is going to work with the students on that part. At this point, the students are required to do research and write short pieces.
