Anthropology 288 (Childhood)

Sascha Goluboff requested a research guide for this new course, for which there are 12 pre-registrants.
Sascha prefers to present this material to the students herself, so I will not be making any in-class presentation.

OED for Alumni?

This query arrived as an e-mail from a W&L alum, and is far from the first on this topic. I thought we should keep a copy, since the question undoubtedly will arise again.

body : Would you consider making your subscription to the Oxford English Dictionary available to alumni?
Also, it might be a nice blandishment for recruiting Friends of the Library.
In either case, a request for participation would make things more manageable on your end.

Our response:

At the moment, we have no technical means of extending online commercial subscriptions beyond current Washington and Lee University students, faculty, and staff. Our access to the Oxford English Dictionary, as with most other online services, is controlled by our campus computing "address." There are no passwords.

We know that there are alumni with interest in such services, and there has been some discussion of entering into negotiations with one or more publishers about extending access for our alumni, but we have not done so yet. Certainly, additional access would raise our subscription rates, and security would be a major concern.

I am sorry we cannot be more helpful immediately, but we hope to be able to provide such service some time in the future. Thank you very much for your interest and your support.

Soviet propaganda

An e-mail from a member of the History Department:
I've agreed to write a book chapter of 8-10,000 words entitled, "Propaganda and Public Opinion in the Soviet Union During the Second World War" and am seeking assistance in compiling a bibliography of English-language publications that bear on this topic. I know research in this area rather well as I have published several works on the Leningrad during World War II; however, I would appreciate your help to make sure that I don't overlook something important. I would be glad to meet with either of you to discuss the matter further. If the library's renovations hinder fulfilling this request, please let me know.

My response:

I have listed below results of searching on the topic of World War II-era Soviet propaganda and public opinion in two databases which cover respectively (1) Russia, the Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe and (2) non-North American history.
The long URL links below should work from on-campus computers. If not, let me know.
The results of a search of a third database, WorldCat, will be e-mailed to you.
Please let me know if you have questions or if there is anything else we can do to hep.

1.
American Bibliography of Soviet and East European Studies
This should be a link to results for this search -- ("world war 1939") and ("propaganda" OR "public opinion") (NOT limited to English-language)

2.
Historical Abstracts
This should be a link to results for this search -- ussr and ("propaganda" OR "public opinion") and ("world war II") (limited to English-language)

In this database, it is also possible to search by historical time period -- in this case, probably 1939-1945. However, when I tried this approach, nearly all of the material concerned the beginnings of Cold War propaganda.

3.
WorldCat
This database consists mostly of books. A list of 15-20 items published since 1990 is being sent to you via e-mail.
