The Impact of Sex on American Culture

This one from Dr. Margand and relates to our perceptions and acceptance of nudity/sex in our American culture. On the one hand we have governmental programs that promote abstinence from sex, while on the other hand --- have you watched music videos or movies lately? No abstinence there.

So why does our society contain these mixed messages? Why is sexuality used in advertising images so often.....and what impact does it have on adolescent sexuality/beliefs/behaviors?

I agree that from the look of things, society appears completely confused about sex and what to do with it. From the political side, this probably fits in a much larger debate about government's moral role.

In terms of psychological effects, I do think that the way that sex is treated in society today is only beginning to yield the types of devastating consequences yet to come. From an intellectual perspective, I am extremely anxious to see what comes of the girls especially with whom I grew up. (The blog's not the place for details, but the reality of the sexual culture in which I was raised would undoubtedly shake the most liberally-minded.)

Like I said, I am interested to see the outcome of this psychologically. Right now, however, I don't have many answers; I'm just saddened. For the little that I do know of the effects is that sex has been reduced to a hedonistic act, and a mere semblance of what it was intended to be. Worse yet, this transformation in how we think about sex opens the door to abuse, promiscuity, etc.
