More Historical Newspapers

The Washington and Lee University Library has acquired significant additional coverage for our ongoing subscription to the commercially-published America's Historical Newspapers database.

The latest enhancement, Early American Newspapers, Series 2, gives us coverage of a total of about 1,000 newspapers dating from 1690 to about 1900. Here is a list of some of the notable newspapers included in this new addition.

Interlibrary Loan Record

The Washington and Lee University Library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service is one of our most popular programs -- and we have the data to prove it.

As befits the always-hectic second half of the Winter Term, March 2008 was our busiest month in history for ILL requests! We filled over 975 requests from W&L students and faculty -- well over 30 per day.
The average turnaround time (request-to-receipt) for requested articles in March was about 3.08 days and about 7.7 days for books.

This service, which is free to W&L students, faculty, and staff, allows access to the collections of hundreds of libraries in the U.S. and elsewhere. If you have questions, please contact a reference librarian or Elizabeth Teaff, who is in charge of ILL.

What Annie Wore

Currently on display in the Main Floor lobby of Leyburn Library is an exhibit entitled "What Annie Wore: Fashion at the Turn of the 20th Century."

Anne ("Miss Annie Jo") Robertson White, Washington and Lee University librarian from 1895 through 1922, distinguished herself as originator of W&L's Fancy Dress. In this role, she serves as inspiration for the library's turn-of-the-century women's fashion exhibit.
Come see books and memorabilia that represent the indulgences and excitement of dressing up in the late Victorian/early Edwardian period in the West.

The exhibit will be available through May.
After that, we probably will have no further Main Floor exhibits until 2009 because of renovation work in the library.

Graphic Novels on Display

Leyburn Library is home to a display entitled "The Graphic Novel," featuring a selection of books from the library's collection chosen by Jemma Mayer, Circulation Assistant in the library. The display is located on the Main Floor lobby and will be available throughout the month of January.

What exactly is a graphic novel? For an introduction, take a look at this article from the Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English.

There are quite a few graphic novels in the library collection, but, unfortunately, they are not shelved together or gathered under any one subject label. In addition to the titles on display, you can find a few more by searching Annie under the Subject graphic novels.
