On 30 March 2009, W&L's Information Technology Services posted this summary of the new addresses:

After considering technology standards and consulting with W&L student leaders and the Student Affairs office, Information Technology Services has chosen this naming convention:

CurrentUsername<classyear>@mail.wlu.edu

So, for instance, a student named Jill Smith in the class of 2012 with the current user name smithj would have the Outlook Live user name smithj12 and the e-mail address:

smithj12@mail.wlu.edu

Please note: This "class year" figure refers to a student's expected graduation class year at the time he/she matriculates and does not change.

According to the publisher, this "digital edition brings together all thirty-three volumes published through 2006 into one searchable online resource.
Some of the Washington and Lee University computing services which graduating seniors (Class of 2009) have used during their time at W&L will become unavailable soon, while others will continue.

Network Access
New graduates will continue to have access to the W&L computing network through the month of June. However, all access to network databases, files, and printers will be withdrawn on 1 July 2009.
W&L's Instructional Technology Services recommends "If you need files that you have stored on network servers, you must save those files to some type of recordable media (floppy, hard disk, CD or DVD, media 'stick,' etc.) or your new Outlook Live SkyDrive."
Through the end of June, new grads can access their files on network drives by logging in at http://vpn.wlu.edu/.
Questions should be directed to Earl Edwards (edwardse@wlu.edu / 540-461-1015) or the ITS Information Desk (helpdesk@wlu.edu / 540-458-HELP).

Databases
Use of most of the commercial databases to which W&L libraries subscribe, such as JSTOR and LexisNexis Academic, is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.
However, W&L alumni, including members of the Class of 2009, now may use "Alumni Editions" of two commercial "article databases," courtesy of our Friends of the Library group. Access is available through W&L's Colonnade Connections resource for alumni.

E-Mail
New graduates will continue to have "lifetime W&L e-mail access" through their new Outlook e-mail accounts.
For more information, see this introduction and this FAQ page.

Approximately 40 current Washington and Lee University seniors have been identified by the University Registrar as scheduled to graduate with honors status.

A major component of each of these students' work is the completed honors thesis, described in the 2008-2009 University Catalog as "involving six credits (no more, no less) of independent work, such as a significant report based upon field or laboratory research, a creative accomplishment in the arts, or a comparable scholarly undertaking, demonstrating more than simply a mastery of subject matter."

The Catalog continues, "A permanent copy of the thesis must be deposited in the Leyburn Library."
These honors theses are catalogued in Annie, the W&L library catalog, and housed in the Archives section of our Special Collections. You can use Annie to view this chronologically-arranged list of past W&L theses.

Seniors submitting honors theses should deliver them to Laura Turner in Leyburn Library's Technical Services area on Lower Level 1. Another option is to leave it at the Information Desk on the Main Floor, with a note that it should be given to Laura Turner.

If possible, the thesis should be submitted without any binding or stapling on it. The library's commercial bindery removes any binding that has been done to it, so loose sheets are preferable.

On February 28 of this year, Mike Dau and his wife Paula, of Lake Forest, Illinois, made a special stop in Lexington on their way to vacation in Florida to return a book missing from the library at Washington and Lee -- for 145 years.

Harry Goodheart, Class of 1966, the owner of Goodheart Books in Tryon, NC, facilitated the donation by arranging communication between Mr. Dau, owner of the book, and Laura Turner, Technical Services Librarian at the W&L University Library.

The book, History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France by W. F. P. Napier, was volume one of a four-volume set. An undated inscription in the book by a Union soldier named C.S. Gates refers to the book being removed during Hunter's Raid in June 1864. On the title page, the handwritten "Washington College" mimics the title page of volume 2 that remained in the library collection. The bindings of the gift volume and volume 2 also are identical. The other volumes of the library's set are bound differently and came to the library through another gift in the early 20th century.

Mr. Dau was excited to see the match between volumes 1 and 2. The only stipulation on the donation was that he not be charged any overdue fees for returning it!

For additional information, see these articles in the Lexington News-Gazette, Roanoke Times and Washington Post.

Washington and Lee students now can pay their University Library overdue fines with canned goods.
The food items then will be donated to W&L's Campus Kitchens project.

How much is your can of peas worth in overdue fines?
$1-5 in Fines = 2 cans
$6-10 in Fines = 4 cans
$11-20 in Fines = 8 cans
$20-50 in Fines = 16 cans
And no -- beer is not a "canned good."

There are some limits to this "bartering": (1) this arrangement applies only to current W&L students; and (2) all lost library materials must be paid for with cash, check, General debit, or charge.

A reminder that W&L students (and faculty, staff, and others) can use the View Your Library Record option on Annie's home page to see a list of library materials checked out.
