The "New" Lexington News-Gazette
Leyburn Library provides access to the local Lexington News-Gazette newspaper through a link on our Web site.
As you probably know, the News-Gazette recently released a more-or-less new version of their Web site as a subscription-only service. Headlines are free, but not much else is.
I already have fielded questions from Journalism students about use of that site, so here is a description of the way things stand right now.
Leyburn Library has begun talking with the News-Gazette about an institutional subscription, in theory covering all W&L users, but we do not even have a price quotation yet.
In the meantime, playing directly into the newspaper's hands, I have gotten my own personal subscription to the site. Until we can work out an institutional arrangement for all of W&L, should you or any of your students need full access to the site, let me know and I would be glad to search the site for you.
Another student question concerns the status of the News-Gazette's online archival search capability, which right now covers only 2008 -- you cannot search for any earlier stories. The publisher has told me in an e-mail that there are no immediate plans to extend online coverage, but they would like to make earlier coverage available some time in the future.
