Where Men and Women Differ in Following the News

Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.
Available online.
"A look at the public's news interests over the past year shows continuing differences between women and men in the types of news stories that they follow very closely. Two New Volumes

There still are some important "reference" works which are available only in printed form (gasp!) and we recently received two which are particularly useful for Journalism and Mass Communications faculty and students.

Mass Communication Law in a Nutshell (6th edition, 2007) is a fairly succinct (600+ pages) overview of the issues listed in the table of contents.

The latest edition of the Associated Press Stylebook (2007) "provides facts and references for reporters, and defines usage, spelling, and grammar for editors. There are separate sections for journalists specializing in sports and business, and complete guidelines for how to write photo captions, file copy over the wire, proofread text, handle copyrights, and avoid libel."

My fingers are crossed for online versions of these titles some time soon.

The Impact of "Cell-Only's" on Public Opinion Polls

Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.
Available online.
"There is an increased concern that polls conducted only on landline telephones may not accurately measure public opinion. A new Pew Research Center study finds that, while different demographically, Americans who mostly or exclusively rely on cell phones are not substantially different from the landline population in their basic political attitudes and preferences."
