Early American Newspapers Online

The Washington and Lee University Library is very pleased to announce that we now are providing W&L researchers online access to Series I of the renowned Early American Newspapers database, from the American Antiquarian Society and Readex Newsbank.

This resource offers digitized copies of over 700 newspapers from 23 states and the District of Columbia printed between 1690 and 1876. You can view a list of the newspaper coverage here.
Some of this material is already available in our library collection, but only in dreaded microfilm or microprint format.

Our subscription link is here.
For additional information, see this page in our Web site.

This is a very expensive item (over $12K) and we would not have been able to purchase it without support from the new President's Initiative Fund. So, thanks to President Ruscio!
There are other online collections of early American newspapers out there, most of which are designed to dovetail with this Series I, which was particularly attractive for its inclusion of a number of Virginia newspapers.
We will work toward additional purchases, but each of them is pretty darned expensive, so nothing else is likely to happen quickly. For now, this series is a great start and should be a very valuable resource, especially for researchers in Journalism and History.
