About this blog
Welcome to the daily blog from Washington and Lee University's first ASNE/Reynolds High School Journalism Institute.
W&L, a small liberal arts college in Lexington, Va., is hosting 35 high school journalism advisers July 6-18, for an intensive session about journalism principles and practices.
W&L's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications is one of five sites for the High School Journalism Institutes this summer.
The American Society of Newspaper Editors started the institutes in 2001 as part of an aggressive national effort to grow scholastic journalism. ASNE’s recruitment includes intensive outreach to schools in urban and rural areas where journalism programs are most under stress.
Since 2001, more than 1,000 high school teachers have completed the Institute, and most continue to teach journalism and/or advise a student newspaper.
This ground-breaking ASNE initiative is funded by a three-year, $2.3 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. There is no charge to the participating teachers or their high schools.
Each teacher will post to this blog during his or her stay in Lexington, offering short insights into the experience. Please check it daily, beginning July 7. You are welcome to post comments in response!
Happy reading.
