Blind Shaft

It's kind of late to be posting this... BUT, what do people think of how the movie Blind Shaft portays the differences in Chinese culture in the economic times following the Cultural Revolution? We're thinking the personalities of the characters reflect a gap between the traditional Chinese values and those found in modern, psuedo-capitalistic society.

Red Sorghum2

In the novel, the author uses colorful imageries; red and white seem to be the prominent colors, with occasional blue, gold and so forth. What are the symbolic significance of these colors and what do they add to the magic realism? The director, Zhao Yimou, is known for his use of color symbolism in many of his other works. How does the use of colors by the director compare with that of the author?

Red Sorghum

In Red Sorghum, the author uses images of sorghum throughout the novel. What is the role of sorghum and/or does it represent anything? Why is it RED, when the color of sorghum is generally yellow/brown/gold?

Role of Men in Hibiscus

Throughout the novel/movie, how do the male characters (Old Gu, Mangeng, Crazy Qin, Wang Qiushe) personify the political ideals of communist China during the 1960's and 1970's?
