It's kind of late to be posting this... BUT, what do people think of how the movie Blind Shaft portays the differences in Chinese culture in the economic times following the Cultural Revolution? We're thinking the personalities of the characters reflect a gap between the traditional Chinese values and those found in modern, psuedo-capitalistic society.

We will be analyzing the negative consequences of the actions of the female characters in Raise the Red Lantern by focusing on the elements of pain, struggle, and death. We will conclude by comparing the Chen household and rules to the modern communist government of China.
In the novel, the author uses colorful imageries; red and white seem to be the prominent colors, with occasional blue, gold and so forth. What are the symbolic significance of these colors and what do they add to the magic realism? The director, Zhao Yimou, is known for his use of color symbolism in many of his other works. How does the use of colors by the director compare with that of the author?
