In the novel, the author uses colorful imageries; red and white seem to be the prominent colors, with occasional blue, gold and so forth. What are the symbolic significance of these colors and what do they add to the magic realism? The director, Zhao Yimou, is known for his use of color symbolism in many of his other works. How does the use of colors by the director compare with that of the author?
