Hi Everyone,
I am excited to be coming to W&L as part of the Applications course. I'm really looking forward to meeting the students in this course and talking with you. I only wish there was a way for the alumni to meet each other too because the bios of the other alumni look really cool. I am sure that I have some tough acts to follow as the last speaker in this series (or "terminal visitor" as Dr. Elmes calls me).
There are two readings that I'd like to suggest that you do before my visit on March 30-31.
Norman, D. (1988). The Psychology of Everyday Things. New York: Basic Books. pp 1-34.
Mindell, D.A. (2008). Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Spaceflight. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press. pp 1-6.
Dr. Elmes will provide you copies of both of these readings. I suggest doing the Norman chapter first. Prop your feet up while you're reading it and do a little thinking about what things you encounter everyday work well and what ones work poorly and why.
Speaking of working poorly, this blog comes to mind for me. I think I posted my resume here on the blog somewhere earlier today, but I'm not sure if it is here or not (and if it is here, where). If you can find it, congratulations.
As you'll see from my resume (if you can find it) and from my visit, a big part of my work is to try to design things so they are easy, efficient, and effective to use. So if things like blogs that are hard to use annoy you, then we will have fun during my visit!
