Statement of my Future- Tori Christmas

First, I apologize for the formatting of the resume that I just posted. Its microsoft word formatting didn't convert well into the blog formatting. I'de be glad to send anyone the microsoft word document via email if that is more helpful.

Second, I cannot say exactly what I have in store for the next five years. I do know that for at least the next two years, I would like to get a marketing-related or consulting job in a large city (preferably on the east coast north of Richmond or in Chicago). Currently, my dream is to ultimately become an Account Planner at a prestigious advertising firm in NYC, although my dreams tend to change often. I really enjoyed using my psychology background to act as an Account Planner in Professor Bower's advertising class last year- I helped develop our consumer insight by interpreting our research in terms of the results of a psyc lit review on "Emerging Adults".

After two years in the workforce, my next move will probably depend on the opportunities that my job has given me. If I am enjoying my job and feel like I could be fullfilled by it for years to come, I will probably stay in that line of work and only go back to school (MBA or advertising/communications degree) if it will help me get promoted. However, I have always had it in the back of my mind that I might want to be a clinical therapist, in which case I will go back to psyc grad school. Obviously, I have alot to learn about myself before I can make any decisions after the next 1-2 years of working and taking some time off for school. I'm interested in learning about how our Alumni teachers decided whether or not to go back to grad school for psychology or other disciplines.

Sallie Armstrong-Statement about my future

I have many ideas about what I would like to do in the next five years. Most importantly, I am planning on graduating next year with some sort of job. I am most interested in athletics and the athletic industry on the professional and coaching side. I see myself going back to school at some point to further my education in psychology or nutrition to further my career, but only after working in the real world as part of event planning for athletic conferences or tournaments. My ideal job would be to coach field hockey at a University.

Our particular CSB just celebrated its 25th anniversary. attaching the article that was in the local papers that provides a pretty good history of our agency. i also ask that you visit our agency website at www.racsb.org and look at the variety of services and programs we offer, typical of most CSBs. unfortunately, some of the service areas are not entirely up-to-date in their info, but you'll get a fair idea of the agency nonetheless...

Mary Hipp - Statement of my Future

Up until this past summer, I thought that I wanted to go on to medical school after college. Considering the fact that I do horribly around blood and stressful environments, I decided that that probably wasn't the best route for me.

I am very indecisive when it comes to what I want to do. Currently, I am considering pursuing a career related to addiction counseling. My favorite courses at W&L have concerned neuropharmacology, and I have some personal experience with dealing with others' addictions.

I also, however, think I would enjoy clinical psychology. I found Abnormal Behavior to be extremely interesting, and I think that a job in that field would appeal to me in the same ways that a medical career would, only without having to attend medical school or be around blood.

This summer I am staying in Lexington and doing research with Professor Woodzicka, and I may also volunteer at a nearby house for mentally ill people. I am hoping that these experiences will help me either rule them out as future careers or show me that it is a field I would like to pursue.

Regardless, I will probably go on to graduate school in psychology, because I feel that it is imperative for a career in both addiction counselling and clinical psychology.

Hannah Schwartzstein - Statement of my Future

My interest in nursing has grown a great deal since my junior year in high school. Though I once considered attending medical school, I realized that nursing facilitates close caregiver-patient relationships that a physicians' schedule often prevents and allows greater flexibility for time spent with my own family and friends. Nursing combines my interest in anatomy and psychology as it requires one to consider and heal both biological and emotional injury. In addition, the recent nursing shortage creates nearly limitless opportunity to explore new cities and areas of clinical care. Experiences that have most inspired my pursuit of a nursing career include shadowing my father, a pulmonologist and critical care physician, while meeting with patients in clinic and years of watching my mother, excited to go to work each morning as an emergency room nurse, come home each afternoon grateful to have met a particular patient that day.
I hope to graduate from Washington and Lee in 2010 and attend an eighteen month BS program at a graduate nursing school on the east coast. I have considered becoming a nurse practitioner or clinical psychologist, but would like to work as a registered nurse for several years first. I am open to all departments of nursing but have most recently consider emergency medicine, OB/GYN, endocrinology, or geriatric nursing.

Grace Barnett - Statement About My Future

This summer I decided to end a life long dream of becoming a doctor. My interests in medicine have evolved greatly over time and landed (when I was a junior in HS) on children. I shadowed a pediatric surgeon that summer and completely fell in love with that kind of work. Ever since, my love of children has grown to include my future children. In thinking about what I want my life to look like, one of the most important things is that I have the time to raise a family of my own. Thus, I have decided that (given the time demands of being an MD) being a doctor is not the best choice for me. I have changed my major from neuroscience to psychology with a poverty concentration. I am really passionate about working with the poor and hope to one day do phsychological work with poor children. In the more near future I am interested in working with kids in a hosptial setting (possibly a Child Life Specialist). I have not decided if I want to go to graduate school or not. I hope that, through this class, I will learn other career paths that might be good for me and how I can get started on those paths.

**I have never made a resume before and didn't really know what to include. I decided to leave out most things that I did in HS.**

Shannon Williams- Statement of Future

My ultimate goal is to become a college professor, ideally at a place where I can teach as much as I research. I plan to go to graduate school in the area of clinical psychology. My interests lie in specifically in the area of chemosensory cognition. In graduate school I want to investigate the relationship between odor processing and the ability to describe a chemosensory experience and its relationship to disordered eating. Therefore, the two programs I am most interested in are at The University of Florida, the psychology department and the dental school, and the clinical psychology department at San Diego State.

I (very recently) decided that I was not going to apply to schools this year, but instead wanted to take a year off before making the huge commitment that is graduate school. I plan to get a job in a field that will make me a more competitive applicant to graduate school. I am in the process of applying for research jobs at the NIH, The Monell Chemical Senses Center, The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation. In addition, I am applying for jobs at various flavors and fragrances manufacturing plants on the east coast.

Kelly Camus - Statement of my Future

I have different ideas as to what I want to do over the next five years. I am hoping to do some sort of research over the summer in psychology and am currently trying to make arrangements with that. Next summer I hope to do some sort of an internship. After graduation, I'm thinking I may want to go right into graduate school. However, if I do decide to wait, I'd probably want to spend a year either doing another internship or some other form of research. I am currently most interested in industrial/organizational psychology and hope to pursue that in graduate school. However, I am also interested in social and cognitive psychology as well.

Intro to Web class portion -- Dr. Levy

Hi there: I'm Dr. Levy and wanted to test this out to see if the technology is too advanced for me (!!). I should probably ask my 15 year old to do this for me while he's texting his friends, studying for exams, and listening to his IPOD :).

I will be posting a handful of chapters from my I/O textbook and another reading or two for you. Drs. Cober, Rosen, and I spoke last week and decided on the readings to give you a flavor for I/O content and processes. Hopefully, these readings will show up somewhere in the next few days.

I look forward to meeting all the W&L students and hearing about how much things have changed since my years there (1980-1984; I was back 5+ years ago to give a talk and had a great time). Take care.

Reading for web conference -- Dr. Levy

I'm going to try to attach/post a few chapters from my textbook that will give you some background to I/O. I will also be posting 1 or 2 articles as well.

Happy Reading!!

Brooke Reidy - Statement about the Future

Although my tentative plan for the next few years is open to change, I would like to eventually become involved in the research process. I have spent almost a year studying the neuroanatomical development of the gustatory system in the hamster and have enjoyed my work immensely. I am very interested in chemosensation as it relates to taste and would love to continue to conduct related research in behavioral neuroscience after college. Given this, I anticipate that I will go to graduate school in the near future, where I will (ideally) work in a lab investigating the chemosensory components of taste. However, I would first like to take a year or two to enter the work force and explore alternative career options. While I have considered looking into internships and/or jobs in the food industry, I would be interested to learn more about other career options that would utilize my interest in neuroscience research in a more applied fashion.

Liz Van Leer- Future Statement

Since taking my first psychology class at W&L, I knew I wanted to pursue a psychology related career. Deciding which area I want to focus on however, has not been quite as clear and is constantly changing. Two of my primary interests are developmental psychology and cultural psychology, specifically the religious and cultural conflicts of the Middle East. I think it would be fascinating to combine the two and work with children and adolescents in the Middle East and research the effects of the conflicts on their development. On the other side of the spectrum, I am also interested in marketing and using psychology to design effective campaigns.

When I graduate W&L next spring, I plan on taking a year off to do research and get clinical experience to see if I am ready to make the commitment to graduate school. I have still not decided which of my interests I would like to pursue, but I am currently looking into educational, developmental, and clinical psychology PhD programs, and various masters programs. If I do not end up continuing my education, I would like to find a job related to marketing and/or product design.

My ultimate goal is to find a career that is interesting and challenging enough for me to feel invested in, that involves interacting with interesting people, and that allows me freedom to have a life outside of work. I am currently attracted to the academic path, but I am looking forward to discovering many other psychology related careers.

Diana Burgreen - Statement about future

After graduation, I plan on staying in Lexington for a year building my résumé. My top choice is to work for Washington and Lee. Subsequently, I would like to move to a large city and work in a corporate environment. I would like to use my Psychology degree to find a job in marketing, advertising, sales, or public relations. I could see myself working in the entertainment, fashion or hospitality industries. Most importantly, I would like to have a job where I work with people, have a flexible schedule, and have the opportunity to advance into executive roles.

Statement about future- Hannah Murphy

I plan to continue research at Washington and Lee until I graduate and begin working at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Little Rock this summer. The research I would be participating in this summer involves the mechanisms of addiction, withdrawal, prevention and treatment. After taking psychoactive drugs, I had the desire to pursue this field of psychology and get a more hands-on experience.
The problem I face is that I am interested in many areas of psychology but I haven't found one that I am especially fascinated with above others.
I plan to go to graduate school within two years of graduating from Washington and Lee and finding some sort of job related to psychology in the meantime (whether it's research or counseling).
I don't know of a specific job I want after graduate school, but I know that it has to be a job that is constantly changing. I eventually want to be my own boss and create my own business.

Statement About My Future - Sarah Jenks

I plan to continue my studies and research in psychology here at Washington and Lee University, and then graduate next year with a B.A. in psychology and a pre-medicine certificate. I then plan on taking a year off before continuing to medical school. I plan on using my year off to explore different interests of mine. I hope to go to other countries, preferibly in Africa or South America, and see how their health care and psychiatry practices differ from our own. Afterward I aspire to attending the Medical University of South Caroline, where I will seek my M.D. Although I am not sure what area I specifically want to go into, I know that I want to try and go into some sort of field of medicine where I can use my knowledge of psychology. I am very interested in helping people with addictions and working directly with the people I treat, so I am looking into maybe doing something where I work with addicts, helping them through a mixture of medicine and counseling.

Scott Miller: Article on psychology evaluation clinic

Greetings from Athens, GA!

I am looking forward to meeting you all in person in a few weeks. In the meantime, I've attached an article to give you some background information on the clinic and system in which I work. My plan is to do a case presentation / lecture on for the first class meeting and have a discussion/seminar on the second day. The article will give you some information that will be helpful on both days.

The article is a bit dated at this point which means some of the test materials, policies and definitions referenced have been since revised or are no longer used. Also, there will be a number of acromyms that the authors assume their audience understand. Don't get hung up on any of that. I'd like you to get a sense of the polices that are involved in defining learning disabilities and how manipulating these standards and definitions could impact students. The article will give you an idea about policy impacting groups. When we meet, the case presentation will give you an idea about how policy impacts an individual.

Let me know if you have any questions or requests. Again, I'm looking forward to getting up to Lexington.

Question for students from Bernie Lewis

When I spoke to this class 2 years ago I spent most of my time talking about forensic psychology and lesser time talking about the practice of clinical psychology. Is this the way you want me to spend my time when we meet in March or would you prefer more emphasis on clinical psychology?

Greetings & Suggested Assignment from Mike Burns

Hi Everyone,
I am excited to be coming to W&L as part of the Applications course. I'm really looking forward to meeting the students in this course and talking with you. I only wish there was a way for the alumni to meet each other too because the bios of the other alumni look really cool. I am sure that I have some tough acts to follow as the last speaker in this series (or "terminal visitor" as Dr. Elmes calls me).

There are two readings that I'd like to suggest that you do before my visit on March 30-31.

Norman, D. (1988). The Psychology of Everyday Things. New York: Basic Books. pp 1-34.

Mindell, D.A. (2008). Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Spaceflight. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press. pp 1-6.

Dr. Elmes will provide you copies of both of these readings. I suggest doing the Norman chapter first. Prop your feet up while you're reading it and do a little thinking about what things you encounter everyday work well and what ones work poorly and why.

Speaking of working poorly, this blog comes to mind for me. I think I posted my resume here on the blog somewhere earlier today, but I'm not sure if it is here or not (and if it is here, where). If you can find it, congratulations.

As you'll see from my resume (if you can find it) and from my visit, a big part of my work is to try to design things so they are easy, efficient, and effective to use. So if things like blogs that are hard to use annoy you, then we will have fun during my visit!

Brooke Reidy - Response to Mr. Lewis

I would prefer to hear more about your experiences in forensic psychology than about the practice of clinical psychology. Thank you for asking!

Brooke

Kelly Camus - Response to Mr. Lewis

I'd like to hear more about forensic psychology since I know much less about that area than I do clinical psychology.

Thank you for asking!

Kelly Camus
