Training Follow-Up

Now that we've had our training, I'd like to hear what everyone thinks now. What questions do you still have? What new questions are lurking?

Use the comments here and we can discuss what our thoughts are now that we know the software.

Jim Kahn:

I think it would be good to get together every now and then and work a map and do some analysis together. Maybe we could get some kind of exercise CD from ESRI to do this.

Jim

Cindy Morton:

Are there maps of the human body? Of the brain?

I'm interested in local and/or regional topo maps. I haven't begun to look for those.

More later, as I think of things. CM

Laura:

I really enjoyed the class and I am grateful for the university's generous support. To do justice to this investment, I am anxious to continue to use the program and to take additional courses.

In the short term, I am curious to learn what resources (GIS data, maps) that are currently owned by the university. Most of the archaeology that is done by W&L students and staff occurs in the Middle Atlantic Region. I can purchase data and maps online to facilitate this research. However I suspect that the university and/or its departments may already own such data. Is it appropriate to share such data, or should the anthropology laboratory purchase its own data? If we do purchase such data, how can we make it available to users outside our department?

CM:

About Jim's comment, when the first "real" projects come up, it might be helpful if a few of us could work together as a team. CM

Mary Abdoney:

Yes, Cindy, I agree.

I also think that it would be very useful for everyone to see what others are working on to spark creativity. Maybe this will become easier for the User Group when we start getting very active in GIS.

Jim, NITLE might be an even better option for training opportunities. Not only could it be cheaper (not sure) but they offer even more diversity in resources. I'll look into it.

CM:

A useful resource.
(I've also posted this to the GIS Wiki at http://library.wlu.edu/wiki/index.php/GIS/GIS )

Go to the official Rockbridge County website (http://www.co.rockbridge.va.us/), click on Departments, click on Geographic Information Systems, then click on GIS Maps, Now Online! (http://arcims2.webgis.net/rockbridge/default.asp). That pops open a dumbed down map viewer but it's an ESRI product. I have to assume the map would work on ArcMap but haven't had time to try it. CM

Lisa:

My apologies for this delayed reply. I had been out for a week's vacation before the classes, so I've been trying to catch up.

I really did enjoy the training, was very happy to be there, and I especially enjoyed meeting and getting to know you folks a little bit!

I agree, the sooner we can work again on a project, starting small, the better. I also agree with Cindy re: the team approach.
